A Science Olympiad, high school musicals, and a meeting to discuss the future uses of the San Rafael campus are some events of note taking place in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD):

The PasadenaLEARNs Afterschool Program is gearing up to host its 2nd annual Science Olympiad Competition. The event will take place Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Blair High School. Students from 21 PUSD schools in grades 2-8 will compete in 17 different events designed to foster 21st Century Skills as well as a love for science. Over 200 students will work in teams to compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals for each event with trophies being awarded to the top performing schools. Blair Middle and High School’s Ovations musical theatre production will be presented Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. This year’s show is Ovations 2014: The Great Broadway Musical with highlights from Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and more. The show will again be staged under the stars in the Blair Amphitheatre at Blair High School, with preshow music by the Viking Jazz Band and dinners for sale prepared by Blair’s Culinary Arts Academy. Students from Pasadena High School, Muir High School and Marshall Fundamental School also get in on the act this weekend with three performances of Little Shop of Horrors. A down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood in this musical that was an Off-Broadway and feature film hit. Shows are Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 at 6 p.m. All performances will be in the Gladiss Edwards Auditorium at Pasadena High School. Tickets at the door are $7/students and $12/adults.

The San Rafael Surplus Property 7-11 Advisory Committee meets Monday, April 28 at 5:30 p.m. at San Rafael Elementary School. Based on seismic findings at San Rafael Elementary School, the school cannot be modernized and the district shall have a plan to vacate the school. The committee’s task is to establish a priority list for the use of the property, provide community input on acceptable uses of the campus, and forward its recommendations to the PUSD Governing Board. Among the items for discussion/action on Monday evening are the final recommendation of priority uses for the San Rafael site and the preparation of the report to the PUSD school board.
