When you are going through a major change in your life, sometimes you feel all sorts of emotions: confusion, frustration, and bewilderment. How do you cope with these changes? How do you confront your emotions and overcome your troubles? Who do you turn to?

Family and friends are our go-to persons for our troubles, yes, but there is someone academically and professionally trained to help you deal with life’s changes. That someone is called a psychotherapist.

Pasadena-based psychotherapist Kellum Lewis expounds the nature of his profession:

“There are people going through a life change, a phase or life situation where they’ve set most of the goals that they’ve wanted to meet. I help them try to identify what their desires are, what their feelings are,” says Lewis. “Usually when people are making life changes, there’s usually something going on that’s making them unhappy, and I try to help them identify what’s going on there.”

Life is a journey, marked with milestones and adventures, and psychotherapists like Lewis help people every step of the way.

“We’re [like physical] therapists. But we’re working with people’s minds,” says Lewis. While physical therapists are all about conditioning your body to become more flexible and better, psychotherapists groom your mind to be more open. Explains Lewis, “So if you think about a physical therapist that’s working with the body…. We’re technically working with people’s minds to help make them healthier and more flexible,” says Lewis.

Lewis considers himself fortunate to be in a position to help people with their decisions and outlook in life, and he credits his education and experience for it.

“It’s pretty serious when you influence somebody’s way of thinking and feeling about themselves,” continues Lewis. “That’s why there has to be somebody with a particular license and that would present a whole trajectory of education and training.”
