One hundred underprivileged Pasadena-area high school students will be given beautiful new or gently used prom dresses free of charge by the Salvation Army in Pasadena.

The nonprofit will hold its 5th annual prom dress event on Saturday, March 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in a boutique setting that showcases 700 donated dresses in varying sizes and styles. The eager teens will be shopping through hundreds of colorful, fashionable prom dresses, excitedly twirling in front of oversized mirrors as they make their final selection.

“We’ve invited about a hundred girls who can’t afford to go out and buy a prom dress to partake in this,” said Jody Davis of Salvation Army of Southern California “We’re trying to make the arrangements so that they will have that opportunity [to attend their proms].”

Women volunteers from the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers will be present to steer the teens toward flattering dresses that are also a “fit” for their personality.

“We’re trying to make sure they have that cherished memory,” Davis said.

The teenagers will also receive a $30 gift card to Target to help pay for their prom accessories.

Only those who preregistered will be allowed to attend the event.

The Salvation Army has been serving the underprivileged people of Southern California for the past 126 years through charity work including its weekly outreach program to the homeless. The nonprofit is located at 960 E. Walnut St., one block East of Lake Avenue at Mentor Street.
