Los Angeles-based quartet Helix Collective will stage a high-energy, “out-of-the-box” mix of world, classical and rock n’ roll during a concert at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, September 3, 12:10 p.m.

Sarah Robinson on flute, Phil Popham on oboe, Meghan Schaut on piano, and Lorry Black on percussion, together released two critically acclaimed albums: “All In” in 2009 and “World Dance Club” in 2013.

The ensemble, which was called “dizzyingly virtuosic [with] exquisite musicianship and world-class range” by the Free Times, has performed in various events including the Hollywood Fringe Festival, Live at Laguna Beach, the White Lake Chamber Music Festival, 21-Sounds Contemporary Music Series and Classical Revolution chapters around the country.

Robinson is co-founder of the Helix Collective Chamber Ensemble. She served as principal flutist with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and section flutist with the Adrian Symphony. She has also performed on piccolo and flute with the West Michigan, Traverse City, Jackson and Long Bay Symphonies.

Popham, meanwhile, is the English hornist for the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra. He also played English horn for nine seasons with the Midland Symphony Orchestra and six seasons as second oboe/English horn of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.

Originally from Grand Rapids Michigan, Schaut grew up active in state and local competitive piano, frequently winning solo and concerto competitions. She is the founding director of the Michigan Summer Chamber Music Festival and is currently adjunct professor of piano at Albion College.

Finally, Black is a freelance percussionist and timpanist in the Los Angeles area. Black currently holds the Principal Percussion Position with the American Youth Symphony and regularly subs with orchestras including the Santa Monica Symphony, Jacaranda Music Ensemble, and Torrance Symphony.
