Pasadena Firefighters took to the streets at the busy intersections of Lake and Cordova as well as the corner of Foothill Blvd. and Rosemead Wednesday morning to round up donations from motorists and passerby’s to help spread awareness and help those affected by breast cancer.
The teams of firefighters and volunteers were an energetic and friendly force as they each waved a custom pink boot to encourage easy donating as the city celebrates breast cancer awareness movement known as Pasadena Goes Pink.
“Breast cancer is important to us because there’s one in nine women diagnosed with breast cancer and I have eight female firefighters in this department so I look around at my sisters and I think, ‘man, it could be one of us’. Raising awareness and starting the conversation about breast cancer awareness is really important not only to me as a female firefighter, but to the community,” said Pasadena Fire Fighter and Pasadena Goes Pink Organizer Danae La Trobe.
A team of approximately 25 volunteers and firefighters set out on the intersections walking across the busy streets and donned their highly visible “turnouts” uniforms and a pink boots ready to be filled with independent donations.
The passerby’s in Pasadena have been extremely generous. Our firefighters have been walking up and down the streets asking for donations and it’s just been a great event today,” said La Trobe.
One hundred percent of donations received go into a special fund that provides breast cancer patients and survivors in the community with services who cannot afford them.
“We’re asking for donations to donate to our charity which is Huntington Hospital’s Jim and Eleanor Randall Breast Center,” said La Trobe.
The PFD raised $20,000 last year through a series of events with primary funding from direct donation and merchandise sales and through a partnership with California Pizza Kitchen that hosts a side-by-side serving fundraiser event.
“This year we hope to increase our sales,” said La Trobe.
