After three years of experimentation, Samuel Adams launched a new line of nitro (short for nitrogenated) canned beer, which includes a white ale, IPA and coffee stout; it says more varieties are forthcoming. The iconic Irish brewery – Guinness – brought nitrogen-carbonated beer to the masses beginning more than a half-century ago. People like them for their velvety smooth, well-balanced mouthfeel!

Nitro beers aren’t like your average beer; they get their fizz from a mix of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The nitrogen interacts with the beer to make it a smoother, creamier, more evenly flavored, less bitter beer with a bigger, frothier head. Nitro beers from the can really do taste and feel like a beer from the tap at a bar. Just as it alters the pour and the look of a beer, nitrogen also undeniably makes it taste smoother and often fuller, imparting an almost milkshake-like texture eons away from the snap, crackle and pop of a CO2 feel.

At Matt Denny’s you can try two great Nitro Beers on tap – Mother Earth Sin Tax Imperial Peanut Butter Stout with a big, intensely flavored dark ale that ends with a warming, bittersweet finish or Guinness Draught – classic, black beer with a well-rounded bitterness that’s balanced with a pronounced roasted flavor that gives off coffee notes.
