Kenpo is a martial art characterized by the use of quick hand strikes in rapid succession and includes elements from Judo, Jujitsu and Aikido. It is used for both self-defense and exercise.
Anthony Angulo, the founder of Pasadena’s Kenpo Academy, believes this is a an important form of exercise for students of any age. He focuses on American Kenpo, a form he compares to a science because it a lot of physics is involved, including linear motion to work, velocity, merge gravity and torque.
“Kenpo should be an exchange of ideas that allows anybody to figure it out at their own pace and routine. Most of us have two legs, two arms and two hands – everybody should find a way to make it work for them,” said Angulo.
This adaptability makes the sport ideal for everyone from students to seniors and helps make practitioners more aware of their bodies.
“Kenpo is also great for kids because it’s a form of physical activity that includes a mixture of styles. And these days society is suffering from a major health issue – kids no longer go out to play, they sit and watch television, play video games and eat snacks,” he added.
Kenpo can help them bring activity back to their lives by challenging both the body and mind.
