Whether you want to host a casual dinner party of a holiday gathering, it can be difficult to plan a celebration if you feel limited by space. As we all know, it’s the people, not the place that makes the party but if you’re still feeling hesitant about hosting follow these tips from Loriann Serna, also known as The Wife of The Party.
Serna suggests planning a party 90 days in advance but adds that starting only 60 days out can work too. The further in advance you plan, the easier it is to stick to your budget and score discounts.
“Most people are challenged by creating a budget and sticking to it…costs can quickly add up leaving no “extra” funds for last minute additions,” she said.
After budget, Valencia says the most important things to consider are the guests and the season. October through December are prime party season and many people have to balance family, friend and work obligations so calendars fill up fast.
Now, that you’ve started planning in advance and have your guest list set, it’s time to evaluate your space. You don’t need a mansion to throw a successful party – the key is creativity.
“The key to making small spaces work is the type of seating and dining experience you provide your guest,” said Serna. “There should always be space for people to sit down comfortably and to move about without having ask other guests to move.”
Valencia suggest spicing things up with a theme party and using decorative details like mirrors, candles and efficient seating. Get creative with décor and make your guests feel welcome by providing additional seating with throw pillows or bar stools.
In the end, your party is not judged by your venue but by your guests’ experience – so have a blast!
