Tacos can be a healthy part of your diet – you just have to make some adjustments when it comes to ingredients you choose! Now you can have your taco and eat it too.
The healthiest option is a non-fried corn tortilla instead of fried or flour tortillas. Frying the shell adds a lot of fat and calories, and corn tortillas are generally more filling and contain fewer calories than flour tortillas.
Then think about what are you going to put in it – beans are a great protein option because they contain a lot of fiber, but you can also go for but eggs, lean ground turkey, chicken and fish. Try to use only a small amount of meat filling and add a lot of vegetables and be creative! If iceberg lettuce is boring, try carrots, peppers and other leafy vegetables.
Soft Tacos are a great option – you can choose any meat, add onions and ciltrano and have it on corn tortilla. If you are watching out for your carbs, change it for lettuce wraps! Add some tomato salsa increase the amount of vegetables and add some extra flavour without adding a lot of fat or calories. Cut back on cheese and use guacamole in moderation.
You can also choose an Enchilada – delicious rolled corn tortilla filled with your choice of meat, in a chili ancho sauce (red) or tomatillo sauce (green) and topped with onions.
