The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) presents their next exhibition “Above and Below” – Susanna Meiers and Nancy Mozur in the SPARC Gallery at the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce on Mission Street.
Artist Victor Raphael curated this exhibition. He writes: “Above and Below refers to the hidden relationships and connections of all things. As above, so below, heaven and earth, inner and outer worlds, micro/macro – they are all principles that have been acknowledged in ancient alchemy and Kabbalah texts, and have been confirmed in recent times by quantum mechanics and sub-atomic particle physics.”
Both Susanna Meiers and Nancy Mozur have their own unique form of alchemy, a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combining of elements. Nancy Mozur notes, “images are brought forth from a deep inner world and become realized outwardly through the creative act. It is a constant relationship between the internal and external interacting with this depth of feeling and the imagination, which places it metaphorically in that above/below space.”
Susanna Meiers states, “Since childhood, I have been fascinated by dioramas. My tiny dramas are operatic in flavor – emotions and struggles are larger than life but tinged with whimsy, humor, and sadness. My intention is to embody dream imagery coupled with my own thoughts and feelings about human relationships, nature and spirit.” Her larger collage pieces that accompany the Little Theaters are intended as an abstraction of the feelings and ideas contained in the tableaux.
Longtime friends, both artists have been professional curators for other artists. Meiers is the gallery director and curator at El Camino College, and Mozur was an assistant curator at Gemini G.E.L., and personal curator and director to Sam Francis and the Litho Shop.
Susanna Meiers and Nancy Mozur have also been dedicated artist for four decades, creating work for themselves in their studios. Above and Below is a wonderful and rare opportunity to view their unique and inspired artwork together.
The SPARC Gallery is located at 1121 Mission Street, South Pasadena.
