Side Streets Projects welcomes 2016 with exciting events and activities.
Cat Chiu Phillips Plastic Garden Float
Over the past few months artist, Cat Chiu Philips has worked with PUSD students to build a parade float out of entirely re-purposed materials as a part of the National Endowment for the Arts funded project “My Pasadena” in partnership with the City of Pasadena’s Public Art Program. The float was on display at the Paseo leading up to New Years Eve. On New Years Day the “Plastic Garden Float” was put on display with all of the Rose Parade floats at “Post Parade” with help from our friends at the Tournament of Roses Foundation.
The “My Pasadena” project asks artists to reflect on their role as a citizen. The “Plastic Garden Float” reflected on consumerism and waste. It allowed us to start a conversation with hundreds of school children, and thousands of people at post parade. The float is on display at our HQ behind Muir High School for the month of January.

Jan. 21, 5:00 p.m.: S.T.E.M. Showcase at Washington Elementary School
Come see works in progress from Contraptions- a unique partnership with Washington Elementary STEM Magnet
5th Graders at Washington Elementary are designing and creating unique, functioning vehicles and creatures as they work in our mobile woodworking workshop for 16 weeks. Once a week our professional artists guide students through the Engineering Design Cycle (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve) as they apply their creativity and problem solving skills. For the first half of the program, students made a gravity powered vehicle to test down a ramp. Students came up with testable questions and experimented with variables including size of wheels and weight of their car. Currently, students are making a kinetic sculpture in the form of a creature. Students experiment with different kinetic mechanisms such as a cam, lever, gears, and joinery.
Before fabricating, students made fully measured drawings of the top, side, and front views of their vehicle.
Address: Washington Elementary, 1520 N Raymond Ave, Pasadena. The classroom will be parked on the playground.
Jan. 27, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Freewaves Lunch with the Lions with Guest Speaker Kelema Lee Moses, Architectural Historian at Pasadena City Hall
Join Side Street Projects for a lunchtime conversation, “Lunch with the Lions,” from noon to 1 pm with Kelema Lee Moses leading an architectural discussion on the significance of the lions in City Hall.
Please bring your lunch while a Freewaves representative explains the art sound project “Lions, Tigers, And….”, shares information about the history of the City Hall building, guides a discussion and records volunteer responses. “Lions, Tigers, And….” is a motion-activated audio collage of sounds—lions, nature and music—in the City Hall Courtyard. You can hear soft roars, jungle sounds and musical notes as you walk by.
