Planned Parenthood Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley celebrated President and CEO Sheri Bonner’s leadership and legacy at this year’s Fall Benefit. In the last ten years, Planned Parenthood has accomplished tremendous change. The affiliate grew from one to four health centers, expanding care to different areas of the community. This change was brought about by Bonner’s vision.
“Tonight is a special night because we’re honoring a woman whose leadership has strengthened the legacy of Planned Parenthood in our community,†said Board Chair Lauren Frankel in her opening statements. “She has propelled our reach by expanding health care access in underserved areas of our community, increasing the breadth and depth of available health services and education opportunities for youth and families, and tirelessly advocating for high-quality care for all.â€
Bonner has 25 years of service with the Planned Parenthood family, ten of those in Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley.
The theme for the event, “Celebrating Leadership and Legacy,†served for a wonderful night of storytelling when Planned Parenthood staff spoke about their support for the organization. One health center manager shared, “At the end of the day, I know my role here at Planned Parenthood is to provide care no matter what. No matter your race, no matter your zip code, your income, or sexual orientation, at Planned Parenthood you are cared for with the highest respect and attention, and to me, that’s what matters.â€
Following the storytelling was this year’s Keynote Speaker, co-creator of The Daily Show, and Planned Parenthood supporter, Lizz Winstead. Her ongoing national comedy tour to benefit Planned Parenthood and NARAL has raised over $2 million nationally and was made into a documentary film, Smear Campaign.
Along for the festivities were Planned Parenthood supporters, the Board of Directors, Event Chair, Karen Hillenberg, Patron Chair, Joan Caillouette, and Congresswoman Judy Chu, who recently received the Planned Parenthood Federation of America House Award for being a champion of women’s reproductive rights.
“When I first started out at Planned Parenthood I’m not sure that I could have even imagined a 25 year anniversary,†Bonner said. “But somewhere along the line, I realized that this is my life’s work. Planned Parenthood is the place I belong and it’s the perfect expression of my beliefs and my passion.â€
