The Pasadena Sierra Club group is hosting its Holiday Benefit Dinner to give current and prospective members can learn about the group’s upcoming outings and conservation activities.
“We’ve been monitoring the Hahamonga ‘Big Dig’ project and watching that, but not much is happening on a local level at the moment that concerns us right now. It’s been quiet,” said Group Chair Ginny Heringer.
The “Big Dig” project — which was originally a plan by the L.A. County Flood Control District to excavate 2.4 million cubic yards Devil’s Gate reservoir basin for flood management purposes is a plan that has been met with resistance from local activist groups including the Sierra Club, Pasadena Audubon Society and Arroyo Seco Foundation.
The County eventually compromised to significantly modify plans to help reduce the proposed environmental impact and has yet to begin a large scale excavation, leaving Pasadena’s conservation issues in a state of pause … for now, Heringer said.
The Pasadena Group is one of 16 regional groups within the Angeles Chapter, the largest chapter of the Sierra Club with a mission to Explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth, according to the group’s website.
“The Sierra Club operates on so many different levels that it’s really the national level that does the real heavy lifting of political work,” said Heringer.
Group Conservation Chair Don Bremner mentioned the Club’s future concerns.
“I’m getting three to four messages a day from the national Sierra Club about rallying out to be especially active now that Trump is going to be the President he’s not considered terribly friendly on some of the environmental issues. The Sierra Club and many other environmental organizations are taking this opportunity to message their members for contributions of money and time to be ready to defend environmental issues on climate change and that sort of thing,” explained Bremner.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Eaton Canyon Nature Center to present programs on current issues affecting the Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley communities that include Pasadena, South Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, Sierra Madre, San Marino, San Gabriel, Monrovia, Temple City, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Alhambra, Highland Park, Eagle Rock.
The Pasadena Group of Sierra Club Holiday Benefit Dinner will be held Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Central Park Restaurant located at 219 S. Fair Oaks Ave.
A percentage of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Pasadena Group conservation and outreach activities. This dinner is open to those not yet members of the Sierra Club. A first year membership can be purchased at the event for an introductory price of $15.
