Hathaway-Sycamores held their eighth annual Celebrating Children event at the Gene Autry Museum on Saturday night.
The event recognized Renée LaBran for her service to Hathaway-Sycamores and commitment to improving the lives of children. She has worked with the organization for 13 years and is committed to sharing the stories of the program’s youth.
“What fills up my heart are the stories of these kids and families,” she said.
After she was first given a tour of Hathaway-Sycamores’ El Nido campus in 2003, LaBran: “My sons go to school in La Cañada Flintridge less than a mile from these cottages, yet their lives are worlds apart from the boys who call this campus home.”
In that precise moment, she says she knew that she wanted to make a difference, and Hathaway-Sycamores was the place to do it.
The focus of the evening was the Transitional Independent Living Program which assists 18-24 year olds transitioning out of foster care. Alumni from the program were in attendance and shared how much Hathaway-Sycamores shaped their lives.
Hathaway-Sycamores offers comprehensive mental health and child welfare services for children in Los Angeles. For more than 114 years, they have reached out to individuals, strengthened families and helped build community.
