Architect Nazanin Zarkesh was installed on Friday, November 22 as president of the Pasadena and Foothill Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture by AIA National President, Mickey Jacob, FAIA. The event took place at the historic Altadena Town & Country Club.

Zarkesh, originally from Iran, said, “Fourteen years ago when I came to this country to get my master’s degree from USC, I never would have imagined becoming president of an AIA chapter.” She added, “I am here tonight because of my fellow AIA member and mentors who have inspired me to always be positive, excited about architecture, and to remember the importance of AIA.”

AIA Pasadena & Foothill was incorporated in 1948 and Zarkesh will serve as the fifth female president in the history of the chapter. She has been with Pasadena-based La Cañada Design Group (LCDG) for 12 years. Her wide range of experience includes design of schools, universities, healthcare interiors, offices, and labs.

AIA National President Mickey Jacob, who flew in from Florida to preside over the event said, “You will have a wonderful year as the President…I hope you find your term as rewarding and fulfilling as I have in mine. Thank you for choosing to be involved on this level with the AIA and for daring to be a leader.”

Also honored was prolific local architect John Gougeon who received the Presidential Citation for Design Excellence. Gougeon’s designs include the Pasadena Presbyterian Church and Saint Rita Catholic Church in Sierra Madre.

Current chapter president Alek Zarifian, AIA, said “We are proud to honor John for his keen interest and care in using his skills to provide a better life for mankind in the home and places of work, study, recreation and worship. He has created edifices that endure the test of time… inspiring past generations and generations to come.”

In October the Pasadena & Foothill Chapter was awarded the 2013 Emerging Professional’s Award by AIA state organization, AIA California Council. The award recognizes work done by the chapter to successfully mentor its young interns and provide professional development support.

The Pasadena & Foothill Chapter of the American Institute of Architects is a professional organization that serves local architects and the community, promoting architecture and the built environment.
