Over this week and next – and really, since the beginning of the month – everyone across the United States has engaged in Christmas food festivities, even if you’re not a Christian. Southern California’s proximity to Mexico means that we get the best of both worlds when it comes to food. From pozole to rompope to non-stop tamales, here are the food signs of Mexican Christmas!
Luckily, you don’t have to travel far to taste traditional Mexican food. At Paco’s you can try traditional Mexican Christmas Chimichanga – a deep fried tortilla with choice of shredded beef, chicken or pork and topped with verde sauce, melted cheese, sour cream and guacamole, served with rice and beans.
Rosca de Reyes – better known to Americans as the king’s cake served during Mardis Gras, rosca de reyes starts popping up in panaderías leading up to the Feast of the Epiphany, and only then. Or make your holiday extra sweet with a Flan a la Mexicana with velvety whipped cream.
Ponche is just one of the wonderful hot drinks that makes an appearance during Christmas, along with Champurrado or Atole. Atole and champurrado are more of a cold-times drink; ponche, on the other hand, is almost exclusively served during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
