One Book One City celebrates hometown baseball this July. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to meet two of Los Angeles’ most delightful Dodger experts at the Sierra Madre Public Library. Team Historian Mark Langill (Tuesday, July 19) and KPCC’s All Things Considered Host Nick Roman (Monday, July 25) will offertwo different and fascinating takes on the heroes and characters of the LA Dodgers.
LA Dodgers Team Historian Mark Langill takes a look back at Vin Scully’s seasons with the team. Langill will also share personal stories of how he, a little league klutz hanging onto Vin Scully’s every word, parlayed reference books and otherwise useless trivia into his dream job. A member of the Dodger front office since 1994, Langill previously covered the ball club as a Pasadena Star-News beat reporter from 1989 – 1993. The Cal State Northridge graduate has written five books about the Dodgers, including Game of My Life and Dodger Stadium. His television appearances include the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary Fernando Nation and the History channel’s American Restoration. Join Mark Langill at the Library on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 7:00pm.
Nick Roman of KPCCs All Things Considered examines the all-American pastime, explains what he loves about the game and shares stories about his time covering the Dodgers in the World Series. Roman’s love of sports has led him to file numerous stories for NPR’s Only A Game. Roman has been a fixture in Southern California news radio for more than 20 years. He served as a producer, anchor and news director at KLON/KKJZ in Long Beach from 1984 – 2004. Roman also helped create CALNET, a daily statewide news program, where he was a producer, news editor and host. For the past 15 years he has taught broadcast journalism to students at Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton. Don’t miss your chance to meet Nick Roman on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 7:00pm.
Appearances by Langill and Roman are part of One Book One City (OBOC), the popular community reading program sponsored by the Sierra Madre Public Library. The Natural, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Bernard Malamud, is this year’s OBOC choice. OBOC invites everyone in the area to read and discuss the same book during a month of exciting programs with the goal of building a sense of community, promoting literacy and having fun.
