The incredible diversity of orchids will be on display Oct. 16–18, 2015, during the International Orchid Show and Sale at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. The Orchidaceae family is a vast one—among the largest in the plant kingdom—with more than 22,000 species in 880 genera. Their blooms are endlessly varied in form, color, and size. For those who only know orchids from the limited offerings at the local garden center, the event is a perfect opportunity to get better acquainted.
During the Huntington show, local and international exhibitors will display their best blooms for the benefit of judges and the public alike. Large, creatively designed installations will feature hundreds of exotic oncidiums (“Dancing Ladies”), brassias (“Spider Orchids”), paphiopedilums (“Lady Slippers”), and miltonias (“Pansy Orchids”), as well as cattleyas, cymbidiums, bratonias, vandas, epidendrums, prostheceas, and many other orchid species and hybrids. The lush floral displays will be on view in the Botanical Center’s Banta Hall. And for those who can’t resist taking a few plants home, vendors from as far away as Educador, Peru, Taiwan, and Thailand, as well as Southern California, will have unusual varieties of orchids for sale along with related merchandise. Lectures and demonstrations will be offered for beginners and experts alike.
The event reflects not only the public passion for orchids but The Huntington’s own dedication to the plants. A number of orchids from the botanical collections will be included in the show, including specimens from the S. Robert Weltz Orchid Collection, donated to The Huntington in 2010.
