Congratulations to eighth-grader Bree Barnes, who received a certificate of commendation from the Freedom’s Sisters at the Museum of Tolerance for her essay in response to the question, “Who is your favorite Freedom sister, and why? What are you doing to continue her legacy?”

Writers could select any woman from the past or present who worked for liberty, equality and the American dream. Bree selected Mae C. Jemison, who in 1992 became the first African-American woman to enter space on the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Bree chose Jemison “because she gave black girls like me the freedom to think and believe that a career as an astronaut is more than just a dream. It can be a reality… the photos of her in a space suit fill me with pride. It’s not every day you see someone who looks like me in a space suit.”
