A male student is among the nominated homecoming court princesses in Blair High School.
The school announced Wednesday morning that Senior Raul Arzate, 17, earned a spot in the four nominations for homecoming court princesses.
Arzate, who has a GPA of 3.5, fits all the three main requirements for nomination: must have high grades, without disciplinary actions and earn enough write-in votes, the Pasadena Star-News reported.
“It’s about bending traditional gender roles,” Arzate told the newspaper. “It’s about being confident with yourself.”
The newspaper says Arcate came out as a homosexual when he was 15 years old. Arzate is currently ranked second among the princess hopefuls.
Blair Principal Trudell Skinner told the newspaper that the school is a safe environment for all students. Skinner added that Arzate’s nomination shows that “the student voice goes right along with society,” the newspaper reported.
