For the fourteenth entry in its Off the Page series of staged readings, Sierra Madre Playhouse will present two one-act plays: Duck Variations by David Mamet and Whisper Into My Good Ear by William Hanley. The two plays, one comedic and the other serious, explore the conversations of two elderly men sharing a park bench. Robertson Dean directs actors Apollo Dukakis and Mitchell Edmonds.
In Duck Variations, the play dramatizes the old adage that people who talk the most with authority about something are the ones most likely to know the least about it. Two old men discuss the ways of ducks and life, making observations that are profoundly hilarious.
Playwright David Mamet won the Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross. His other plays include Speed-the-Plow, Oleanna, American Buffalo, Edmond, The Cryptogram, The Water Engine, Mr. Happiness, Sexual Perversity in Chicago and more.
In Whisper Into My Good Ear, both men become aware that it is often enough just to be alive and to search each day for the values that even the most wretched can perceive.
Playwright William Hanley (1932-2012) won Drama Desk Awards for Whisper Into My Good Ear and Mrs. Dally. His other plays include Conversations in the Dark, Slow Dance on the Killing Ground, Flesh and Blood, No Answer and Today Is Independence Day.
