The Pasadena-Foothills Association of REALTORS® Charitable Foundation (PFARCF) presented scholarships totaling $10,000 to ten local public high school students last week. Each year, PFARCF chooses winners based on several criteria including GPA, community involvement, extracurricular activities, need, personal attributes, leadership skills, and goals.
The students who each received a $1,000 scholarship were Patrick Castro of Clark Magnet H.S., Sophia Courtney of Pasadena H.S., Nathan Lam of San Marino H.S., Jenny Lee of Verdugo Hills H.S., John Nagel of La Cañada H.S., Jacob Matthews and Alexis McNevin of Crescenta Valley H.S., Diana Palma Resendiz of Marshall Fundamental H.S., Julia See of Blair H.S., and Grant Taylor of John Muir H.S. The scholars plan to go into science, medicine, economics, political science, cosmetology, law, nursing and architecture.
“We had an extremely difficult time choosing just ten winners out of so many outstanding applicants this year,” said PFARCF Scholarship Committee Chair Ruth McNevin. “The high academic achievement and community involvement of these students just amazed us.”
McNevin and fellow committee members Evan Huynh, Sid Karsh, Deborah Maxson, Terry Shelton, Lin Vlacich and Lynnell Woodward reviewed 56 applications before finally deciding on this year’s award recipients. “These scholarships will help our local students earn degrees and go on to make an impact in their professions and their communities,” added McNevin.
PFARCF organizes various fundraisers each year to finance the scholarships as well as donations to local charities. This year’s events include Wine Tasting on June 16, A Taste of Pasadena on September 20, Bingo Night on October 28 and Wreath Auction on December 2.
