What’s so special about Hatch Chiles? These unique chiles are a seasonal treat and only available for a short period of time each year. They get their name from the Hatch Valley in New Mexico, a 15-mile area winding along the historic Rio Grande River known for its sandy-loam soil. Pair this with with Rio Grande river water you get the perfect “chile climate.” Hatch chiles are prized for their unique flavor, buttery texture and range in heat from tame to extra hot.
More than 82 years ago, the tradition of growing chiles began with Joseph and Celestina Franzoy who immigrated to the Hatch Valley from Austria. Passed down from generation to generation, their family has grown to over 500, many continuing the chile farming tradition such as Young Guns principal owners, Chris and Tammy Franzoy, who have striven to provide the best quality of chile for over two decades.
Le Grande Orange Cafe is making the most of these delectable vegetables with their first annual Hatch Chile Roast. Their on-site roaster and specially created menu are the stars of the Hatch chile season and LGO chefs have created a special menu featuring chiles for the occasion.
Anyone who stops by can purchase a little piece of New Mexico to take home with them – packages of “roasted with love” or fresh chiles will be available for purchase. Roasted chiles can be used immediately or frozen for later.
