Some 60 members of the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena are being given the chance this year to enjoy a unique summer camp experience at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada.
Led by student members of the school’s Athletic Council on Leadership, the camp will immerse Club kids in computer studies, fine arts, and athletics for one week beginning Monday, June 9. Participants will be divided into three groups that will rotate between the different areas each day. The camp concludes on Friday, June 13 with a special ceremony at the Flintridge Prep campus featuring a video recap of the week’s activities. Campers will also share their experiences first hand with parents, school staff, and Club staff.
Targeted to Club members in fifth- through eighth-grade, this first-ever camp seeks to provide local youth with a safe place in which to learn skills that will help them gain confidence and competency in the areas of computers, fine arts, and athletics. The school’s vision is to welcome back as many of the inaugural fifth-grade campers as possible each year, ultimately awarding scholarships to Flintridge Prep upon their graduation from middle school four years hence.
Flintridge Prep’s Director of Athletic Initiatives, Alex Rivera, said that the school is very excited about this partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena. “We share a common goal to provide opportunities and experiences through life lessons. Building relationships and memories comes from devotion and should never be taken for granted. We value respect, kindness, commitment and friendship, and we want to pass on these values to the kids in the camp for years to come.”
Flintridge Preparatory School, founded in 1933, is a private, independent co-ed day school for grades seven through 12. The Athletic Council on Leadership focuses on leadership and service on campus and in the community, working to rally school spirit, encourage impactful community service, and teach life lessons through athletics, and embodies the school’s mission to provide a balanced experience for all students.
“We are so grateful for this partnership with Flintridge Prep ACL,” said Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena President and CEO Rachel Estrada. “The work we are doing through this collaboration is an opportunity our youth may never have had otherwise.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena was founded in 1937 and today serves more than 3,500 youth annually. Its mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need the Club most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
The Club offers programming in five areas to help its members develop into successful, well-rounded adults: Education and Career Development; Character and Leadership Development; Health and Life Skills, Arts, and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
