For about 45 minutes at the start of the team’s usual practice time, five of its competitors demonstrated their usual events in front of a classroom of their teammates and teachers.
First up was Tina Liu ’14, who gave her rendition of a November 2012 TED Talk by Leslie Morgan Steiner, a domestic-violence survivor and advocate. Following Tina was fellow boarding student Rachel Koo ’14, who offered her own spin on a February 2013 TED Talk by North Korean refugee Hyeonseo Lee. Both speeches were electrifying; Tina’s can be seen here and Rachel’s can be seen here.
Rounding out the showcase were novice debaters Emily Paszkiewicz ’17 and Alexandra Tighe ’17, who conducted an abbreviated Lincoln-Douglas debate on the following topic: “Resolved: In the United States criminal justice system, truth-seeking ought to take precedence over attorney-client privilege.” It’s the same topic that debaters across the country are tackling during the months of November and December. Emily’s and Alex’s debate is available for viewing here.
Between the two events, varsity debater Maddie Collins ’15 demonstrated just how quickly she and her peers have to rattle off a list of topics to kick off a debate, all to ensure themselves the broadest number of possible arguments.
