“The ‘80s was the last standout decade in quality fashion – it’s very funky, very unique,” said Veronika T. Sorrow, the owner and fashionista behind MeowMeowz, Pasadena’s music-focused retro shop.
Sorrow explained that her store carries vintage clothes – many of the items date back to the ‘80s and are from her personal collection – but refers to the shop itself as “retro” because it is emulating the decade. The funky store has a ceiling papered with movie posters and a funky green and pink neon theme.
“Rock ‘n roll has a deep history rooted in fashions that went against the grain – wearing whatever it took to stand out,” said Sorrow.
She explains that many of these fashions are performance clothing which create a persona and show support for the rock ‘n roll movement. From radical punk outfits to shoulder pads and leather cuffs – you’ll find a wealth of fashion and music memorabilia.
In addition to Punk, New Wave and Rock t-shirts, clothing, shoes and accessories, MeowMeowz also carries records, CDs and cassettes. You’ll find music and memorabilia from bands like Depeche Mode, The English Beat and The Clash as well as lesser known artists.
The store has a performance stage that give many local high school bands a venue for them to play their first shows. Sorrow says that the music is mostly alternative rock and the store is a safe place for musicians of all ages to make their stage debut.
