Ten years ago a group of women, with an invitation from Friends In Deed, opened The Women’s Room (TWR), a daytime refuge for women who are alone and homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. On February 22, many of the original group will be joined by a host of new supporters and friends, including guests of TWR, to celebrate the event at the Rose Bowl’s Brookside Golf Club’s Mediterranean Room.

TWR began with a hospitality room in what had been a storeroom at Friends In Deed at Washington and Los Robles. It has since added many conveniences including shower and laundry fa-cilities, and housing assistance.

“TWR has served hundreds of women since 2007 and helped house seven to eight women each year — a significant number in this population,” says Jackie Knowles, founding director. “TWR has continued to expand its programs and in the near future hopes to extend them to over-night.”

Since the beginning, TWR has had the support of virtually every women’s civic group in wider Pasadena. This is an opportunity to help TWR grow even more.

The event will include food and drink, music by Grupo Bella — modern women’s mariachi band, and Stories from the Street. FID also will recognize the founding organization — the All Saints Women’s Community and founding leaders, Monica Hubbard and Knowles.

David Gooler of Rebuilding Together, who made the laundry and shower possible, and the Rev. Michael Bamberger, FID board president in 2007, also will receive special recognition.
