Preparing Costumes for the Pajama Game

“The Pajama Game,” a musical comedy based on the novel “7 1/2 Cents” by Richard Bissell, is coming to Monrovia this March. “The Pajama Game” (book by George Abbott and Richard Bissell, Music and Lyrics by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler) will be directed by Bill Shaw, Choreography and Musical Staging by Rikki Lugo and Musical Director/Conductor is Brigham Freeth. The Shakespeare Club of Pasadena will stage this play with a 16-piece orchestra as their annual benefit show on March 24. 25 and 26.

“It’s a wonderful theatrical experience,” said John Campbell, the Drama Chairman of the Shakespeare Club of Pasadena. ”It is a very fun musical with a lot of laughter.”

The Shakespeare Club previously presented “The Pajama Game” in 1993. This show marks their 68th annual benefit production. All proceeds from the play will help fund The Shakespeare Club’s Scholarship Program for Pasadena Unified School District’s, carefully selected graduating high school students who will be attending college in the fall. He adds that students at Monrovia High School have the option of taking a class in lighting and sound production for musical theater and students will assist club members as stage crew.

“It’s a real community event,” said Campbell.

“The Pajama Game” follows that story of women working in a pajama factory who are fighting for a seven and a half cent raise. This timely topic is presented in an entertaining way through musical numbers, acted scenes and dance. Campbell describes the play as “a toe-tapping, comedic love story….brimming with songs and dances that have become musical theatre standards, including “Steam Heat”, and “ Hernando’s Hideaway.”

The Shakespeare Club looks forward to staging this production and continuing their legacy of community involvement. In addition to their annual benefit production, the club supports numerous charitable causes in the Pasadena and surrounding San Gabriel Valley communities such as, Rosemary’s Children’s Services, Friends of Foster Children, Villa Esperanza, the Walter Hoving Home, The Women’s Room Project, Door of Hope, Wellness Community, and Trinity Youth Services.

“The Pajama Game” will run on March 24, 25 and 26 at the Louise K. Taylor Performing Arts Center, 825 W. Colorado Blvd., Monrovia, CA. Call 800-838-3006 or visit http://shakespeareclub.brownpapertickets.com/ for more details.
