2016scionim475The Scion iM is in its first model year and it’s looking good. With a sporty demeanor, good fuel economy and plentiful features it’s a great first car.

Also notable is the two years of free scheduled maintenance that is included in the price of the car.

2016scionimintThe 2016 Scion iM is a five-passenger hatchback that is offered in one trim level which means no head scratching trying to decide the merits between trim levels. Standard are 17-inch alloy wheels, LED running lights, automatic headlights, power-folding heated mirrors, full power accessories, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, tilt-and-telescoping column with leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, 60/40-split folding rear seats, rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, 7-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker stereo with HD radio, streaming Internet radio and a USB interface.

There a few extras that can be added like a navigation system, interior ambient lighting and various sport body enhancements. Also available are performance upgrades from Toyota Racing Development that include an air filter, stiffer sway bars and lowering springs.

With a 1.8-liter four banger powering the iM, horsepower is 137 with 126 pound-feet of torque. A manual six-speed or optional automatic CVT is available to make it go. Expect to get 28/city, 37/highway and 32/combined mpg.

On the inside drivers will like the 7-inch touchscreen for ease of operation and reach. Equipped with plenty of padded soft touch materials, the driver is less likely to bang a knee or shin.

2016scionimtwincrUp front there is plenty of head and legroom for taller passengers, seats are cushy too for longer drives. Backseat passengers may feel a bit cramped though as the head and legroom is not as lavish as the front seats. Cargo capacity is good at 20.8 cubic feet and the hatch has a wide opening for ease of removal.

While the iM won’t break any speed records, it will get you to where you want to go with minimal thrash and gnashing. Ride quality is good with a cushy suspension to ease out all the rough roads and steering is good for city driving.
