A student from Hamilton Elementary School in Pasadena has been selected as one of the winners of the annual Southern California Metropolitan Water District Student Art Contest and was recognized at a ceremony at MWD headquarters on December 8.

Matthew Vargas, a second grader at Hamilton, was one of several K-8 students who submitted their entries for this year’s contest based on the theme “Water is Life” which Pasadena Water and Power opened in February.

His entry was one of the top two entries selected in Pasadena, the other one by Maria Karapetyan. PWP then submitted 10 entries to the MWD for an additional round of competition.

At that round, MWD selected 36 students to have their work highlighted in the 2017 calendar which is distributed to 11,000 recipients. Vargas’ artwork will be featured in the month of October.

His entry will also join the 35 pieces on a Student Art Exhibit Tour, which will display the art throughout MWD’s service area over the course of 26 weeks, reaching over 20,000 people.

The annual MWD Student Art Contest is held to encourage environmental stewardship and creativity among students.

Vargas’s parents and PWP representatives were at the ceremony at MWD to support his win.
