One of the primary focuses for the Maranatha Science Club is the National Science Bowl at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. This nationwide academic competition, funded by U.S. Department of Energy, tests students’ knowledge in all areas of Science and Mathematics. Each year, over 10,000 students nationwide apply to compete in one of over 100 regional Science Bowl competitions. This year, the Maranatha Science Club was selected to compete in the Science Bowl for the 2nd year in a row and they reached another significant milestone in the club’s history! Unfortunately, the first two rounds pitted the Minutemen against two past championship teams. However, the team stayed determined and even ended up beating one championship team at the first half time. During the entire competition, Maranatha’s team swept up two total wins. Their highest score was 62:0 and in this competition, every single point counts. This was an amazing achievement for the team!
Maranatha’s Science Bowl Team is led by Team Coach and Science Teacher, Mr. Girma Aleme, and Dr. Shouhua Huang, a senior member of the Engineering staff at JPL. The Maranatha Science Club, founded in 2014, was established to explore God’s universe, and to love and appreciate His creation. Since the club’s creation, its members have gained countless amounts of scientific knowledge pertaining to astronomy, earth science, energy science, and core science subjects, specifically related to physics, chemistry, and biology.
Dr. Shouhua Huang, stated, “We believe the MHS Science Bowl Team will attain more achievements next year, since we have such strong support and help from the school leadership and all of the Science Club members. Also, a huge “thank you” to the Maranatha faculty and staff members who helped us along the way! The team truly couldn’t have attained this achievement without your help, support, and prayers.”
