Hillsides, a foster care charity, has launched a #GivingTuesday campaign, #kidsfirst, to help financially challenged families put food on their table during the holidays. The goal of the campaign is to raise $6,000 to provide 60 families with $100 worth of groceries.

Hillsides serves 13,000 children and families across Los Angeles County, many of them below the poverty line. For families struggling to survive, the holidays add financial stressors that can trigger despair and anxiety.

“The two-week break from school is a particularly tough time,” said Community Resources Director Laura Kelso. “The families we serve rely on the free school breakfasts and lunches, and without our assistance, the children and families would go to bed hungry.”

#GivingTuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving on November 29, 2016, is a global day of giving to offset the commercialism of the holidays. Last year 700,000 people participated in #GivingTuesday, raising $116 million.
