2017 marks the Year of the Fire Rooster in the Chinese zodiac. The new year began on Saturday, January 28 and the celebration typically lasts 15 days. The festivities include giving red envelopes of lucky money to children, eating lucky foods like, sweet dumplings, fish and noodles and watching a dragon parade with fireworks. This year, celebrate the Year of the Fire Rooster with a trip to one of Pasadena’s favorite Taiwanese bakeries.

85 C Bakery offers a wide assortment of baked items in a self-serve bakery, pastries and cakes in the pastry case plus tea and coffees available from the beverage bar. Christopher Jocson, from 85°C Bakery Cafe’s Marketing and Public Relations Department, explains that Taiwanese bakeries are known for their variety of sweet and savory options.

Jocson recommends pairing baked with beverages for a light meal or snack. This combination is especially popular among commuters and students. Grab a tray and tongs in the bakery section to select your pastries and then proceed to the counter to pay and order a drink. Don’t forget to visit the bakery display case for over 60 cakes, bars and cake cups. Jocson adds that 85 C can customize any cake for parties and celebrations.

In the bakery section, one of their most popular items is the Marble Taro bun which pairs well with Iced Jasmine or Iced Grapefruit Green Tea. Jocon adds that the Icy Salt Coffee is one of their signature drinks and this robust drink pairs well with a delicate brioche. Jocson explains that sea salt enhances the flavor of the coffee; this unusual sounding combination is balanced by sweet cream.

Another popular bakery option is the new Sriracha series of baked goods which includes spicy breads like Spicy Green Onion Chicken – a sweet bun filled with chicken and green onion, topped with shredded cheese and a drizzle of Sriracha sauce. They plan to create more flavorful, spicy combinations and breads in the coming months.
