Acclaimed chamber music ensemble Camerata Pacifica returns in April with music by Beethoven, along with three of the most important composers the U.S. has produced: John Harbison, John Cage, and Michael Daugherty. Harbison, well known to SoCal audiences from his recent String Trio commissioned by Camerata Pacifica, and Daugherty, best known for his pop culture-influenced works, both address serious politics in the music on this program. Harbison’s Abu Ghraib is a prayerful reflection on a brutal event in recent American history, performed by Principal Cellist Ani Aznavoorian and pianist Molly Morkoski. Daugherty digs into Cold War America with two works for string quartet and pre-recorded sound: Sing Sing: J. Edgar Hoover, which includes historical recordings of Hoover, and Paul Robeson Told Me, an homage to the great African-American tenor and activist. The concert’s string quartet includes Aznavoorian, with Principal Violinist Kristin Lee and violinist Giora Schmidt, and Principal Violist Richard Yongjae O’Neill. John Cage’s (in)famous 4’33”, performed by the string quartet, marks a significant point in both the composer’s output and in the history of American experimentalism.

The program concludes with a classic of the string quartet repertoire, Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 8 in E minor, Op 59, No. 2, “Razumovsky.” Written in his middle period, the time of the Eroica Symphony, this work by one of music’s most vocal mavericks is the perfect foil to the first half of the concert.
